How to perform

Hinge at hips, lowering torso to near horizontal with the bar hanging in front. Shrug shoulders and retract scapulae while exhaling. Pause, squeezing traps. Inhale and lower the bar, fully protracting shoulder blades. Return to start with control.

Tips

To maximize back engagement, actively squeeze your shoulder blades together throughout the movement, focusing on the muscles between your shoulder blades. Keep your arms straight and relaxed to isolate the upper back muscles and prevent unnecessary arm fatigue, allowing for a more controlled and focused pull. Maintain a flat back during the hinge to protect your lower back and ensure proper form, engaging your core for stability. Drive your elbows slightly backward during the shoulder blade retraction to enhance the contraction of your mid-trapezius and rhomboids. Be mindful of your neck position, keeping it neutral and avoiding any strain by focusing on pulling with your back muscles, not your head. Concentrate on the feeling of pulling your mid-back muscles together to ensure you're targeting the correct muscle groups and achieving the intended benefits of the exercise.
