Press dumbbells overhead until arms are nearly straight. Briefly pause, squeezing your shoulders. Slowly lower dumbbells back to shoulder height while keeping your core engaged and back neutral; maintain a neutral grip.
To protect your shoulder joints, focus on keeping your elbows in front of the dumbbells throughout the movement, rather than letting them drift out to the sides. Drive the dumbbells straight upward, visualizing a line extending from your hands to the ceiling, which helps ensure proper shoulder engagement. Actively brace your core muscles throughout the exercise to stabilize your spine and prevent lower back arching. Maintain a neutral wrist position – avoid bending or flexing your wrists – to prevent strain and discomfort. At the top of the movement, consciously squeeze your shoulder blades together to maximize muscle activation and improve stability.
