Bend sideways at the waist toward the dumbbell, keeping your back straight and gaze forward. Lower until you feel a stretch on the opposite side. Pause, then engage your obliques to return upright. Alternate sides.
To isolate the obliques, focus on bending primarily at the waist, minimizing movement in your hips or knees, which will help ensure you're targeting the correct muscles. Maintain a straight back throughout the exercise to prevent strain and ensure proper form, imagining a line from your ear to your hip. Keep your gaze fixed forward to help stabilize your spine and prevent unnecessary neck movement. Control the lowering phase of the exercise, resisting the pull of the dumbbell to build strength and prevent momentum. Actively engage your core muscles throughout the entire movement to stabilize your torso and protect your lower back.
