Engage your core. Exhale and raise the dumbbell to the side in an arc, leading with your elbow. Lift until your arm is parallel to the floor, pinky higher than your thumb. Pause briefly at the top, squeezing your deltoid. Inhale and lower the dumbbell slowly to the starting position. Switch sides.
To initiate the movement, focus on leading with your elbow, creating a smooth, arcing path for the dumbbell and ensuring your deltoid is the primary mover. Visualize a gentle curve as you raise the weight, avoiding a jerky or rigid motion. As you reach the top of the movement, ensure your pinky finger is higher than your thumb, which helps to maximize deltoid activation and proper shoulder positioning. Maintain a stable torso throughout the exercise, preventing excessive rotation or swaying, which can compromise form and shift the focus away from your shoulder. A slight bend in your elbow throughout the movement helps to protect the joint and allows for a more controlled range of motion. Finally, control the descent of the dumbbell, resisting the urge to drop the weight quickly, as this eccentric phase is crucial for muscle development and injury prevention.
